Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo have been fantastic allies to the LGBT community. When Ayanbadejo got blasted by Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr for supporting Marylanders for Marriage Equality, Kluwe responded to Burns in kind with a wonderful letter responding by saying gay’s getting married “won’t turn you into a lustful cockmonster,” and ended it with this awesome tidbit:

P.S. I’ve also been vocal as hell about the issue of gay marriage so you can take your “I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing” and shove it in your close-minded, totally lacking in empathy piehole and choke on it. Asshole.

Well Kluwe and Ayanbadejo did a joint interview talking about the letter and Burns reaction with GQ, where they named the two players “Honorary Gays of the Year”.

Kluwe: I was online, and I saw the letter from Burns. I was like, “Wow, that’s really messed up.” I literally couldn’t fall asleep, because I kept thinking about it.

Ayanbadejo: I was in the locker room when I heard about Chris’s letter. I saw a line from it in a tweet: “They won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster.” I was like, “Oh, my God, I need to focus all my attention on this. I’m going to lock myself in a room, and I’m gonna enjoy every moment.” Over the next few days, I had conversations with five to ten of the [Ravens players] about what had happened. I asked them if they could play with a gay player. Everybody was like, “Yeah, I totally could.” So that was pretty impressive. It shouldn’t be impressive, but it was.

Kluwe: The first player to come out is going to face unprecedented media scrutiny. It’ll be historic. It’s gonna have to be someone tough enough to deal with the distractions. And hopefully he’ll know that not just me and Brendon but other players support him. – GQ

I love that they’re so out and proud with their support, and I agree it’s just a matter of time until someone actively playing in the NFL come’s out, and I’ll be sure to stand by them as Brendon and Chris have stood by us.
