Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has suspended the distribution of safe-sex education materials to schools.
Known as “anti-homophobia kits” Brazil, they contained gay and lesbian video scenes and were about to be distributed through the ministry of health and the ministry of education to help combat homophobia.
A government spokesman said after President Rousseff personally reviewed the materials then decided it wasn’t fit for children. It is also said she rejected the video because it did not offer an objective view of homosexuality.
However, I suspect that isn’t the true reason the halting the distribution, NPR also reports the evangelical Christian members of Congress threatened to block all legislation unless President Rousseff stopped the films.
“I voted for her in the last elections,” congressman Jean Wyllys said, “because I thought she would defend the rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual citizens.”
“If she doesn’t do a U-turn and change her mind, I will urge all gay people not to vote for her again.”
