The Thing before The Thing

The Thing (2011)

If you’ve seen John Carpenter’s original The Thing (1982), you’re going to love Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s new The Thing (2011).  I would say Carpenter’s original Thing is definitely the better of the two, as most originals are, but Heijningen Jr.’s 2011 Thing is nothing to shake a stick at.  If you’re worried that The Thing (2011) is just a remake, rest assured it is not. This one is a prequel and gives great respect to Carpenter for the original work.

Drive to the theater. Or walk. Just go.

Jump on the bus, hop on the BART, or get in your car and head to your nearest theater. Then buy your ticket to see Drive with Ryan Gosling and get ready for a thrill ride that you’re in no way expecting.

Ryan Gosling plays a man who is a stunt driver by day, and criminal driver by night. If you hire him to be your driver, you have a five minute window to get your ass back in the car so he can get you the hell outta dodge. The film opens with Gosling getting ready to drive to his much more lucrative nighttime job, and with all of the intensity and suspense you can handle, it really sets the tone for the rest of the film.

Rory’s Story: Why Civil Unions Suck

This one minute argument against civil unions come from Ireland and breaks our hearts with why civil partnerships just don’t cut it. Even though Obama has just mandated for hospitals to extend visitation rights to partners, civil unions still do not grant all of the same benefits that marriage does.

Haven’t we already learned that separate is not equal?

9th Circuit blocks AZ law limiting same-sex benefits

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against a 2009 Arizona law stripping same-sex partners of public employees of their health-insurance coverage. Tuesday’s ruling means the state must continue to provide coverage until there is a full trial of whether or not the 2009 law is unconstitutional.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld a temporary block on a controversial 2009 state law that sought to strip health coverage for gay and lesbian domestic partners of Arizona employees.

In a 13-page opinion, the three-member appeals panel said such a law would go against the long-standing constitutional right to equal protection.

It Gets Better from the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation, except Scott Brown

Look at all of these Republicans, doing the right thing. Warms my cold liberal heart, I have to say.

The Massachusetts Congressional Delegation all came together to make an It Gets Better video, but you may have noticed there is one particular member missing, Scott Brown.  The reason? Because “His main focus is creating jobs” and because the project was started by Dan Savage, “It’s reprehensible for Senator Brown’s opponents to associate with this person in order to score cheap political points.

This doesn’t look too good for you Scott brown, just saying.

Focus on the Family testimony gets torn apart

Sen. Al Franken tears apart Focus on the Family’s Tom Minnery’s written testimony at the Senate hearing to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. Tom Minnery cites a 2010 study claiming that children with gay parents suffered because they didn’t have a mother and a father.  Sen. Al Franken did the right thing and actually took a look at the study, and exposes Tom Minnery’s interpretation for what it was: bullocks.

My advice to you Tom, learn how to read. Then you might leave the stone age with all of your hate filled beliefs.
