Facebook drags local paper into online hot water

Like most local news outlets, Visalia California’s local newspaper, the Visalia Times Delta, has a Facebook account.  They post blurbs about various stories in the paper through Facebook’s “share” feature.  Today an article about a local high school wrestler caught some folks off guard.

Oops.   Facebook’s automatic “crop and copy” feature surprised a few folks.

Some Facebookers didn’t care for the results at all.  (comments should be read from bottom up)

Apparently it’s OK for high school and college wrestlers to ‘go commando’ in their attire, but heaven forbid anyone notice!

Personally, I don’t have a problem with it.  ;-)

Here’s the picture as it appears on the paper’s website, and printed editions:

The paper also looks to have deleted the image from their timeline:

Oh well…  it *is* supposed to be a “family” newspaper.  And it is in the middle of California’s ‘Bible Belt’.  All to be expected, I suppose.

Keep a sharp eye out, you never know when something interesting will pop up on the Intertoobs.

  1. When I saw the cropped photo of the wrestler on the newspaper’s facebook page, I simply wondered why they had chopped his head off. I didn’t notice his ‘other head’ until I read the comments.*snicker*.

  2. I don’t have a problem with the thumbnail either. Lol.

  3. To be fair, people do kind of have to be ‘looking for it’. I noticed the big R first :)
