So after my second or third watch-through of The West Wing, I had the bright idea to look up what Sorkin was up to lately, and that brought me to The Newsroom. I absolutely love this show.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Sorkin’s style, he’s a very fast-paced, witty, political junkie with high, and low-brow humor. If you enjoyed The West Wing, I can’t recomend The Newsroom enough.
The Newsroom is a political drama, and deals with real events and real issues that went on in the recent past. Season one covers everything from the 2010 BP Deep Horizon disaster, to how the Tea Party movement is hijacking the Republican Party and driving it so far right they’re going to sail right off the edge of the Earth. They talk about real political issues that we are still facing today, in an edgy, honest, and unique way.
If this intrigues you, watch the trailer below.
At times, a couple of the characters can be a little shrill and neurotic, but the whole cast and their part in the storylines is what makes this show worth watching. The show also really reminds me of Rachel Maddow on MSNBC, which is probably because he did his research for the show by being behind the scenes of Hardball with Chris Matthews, and Countdown with Keith Olbermann if Wikipdeia can be belived.
So you already have HBO because you love Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and Masters of Sex, so do yourself a favor and watch the first season. If you’re not hooked by then, well I don’t know what to tell you. Oh and if the first trailer didn’t convince you to watch the show, here’s another one.
Season One get’s a 5/5 for innovative and brilliant entertainment.
