With this passing Christmas day, there are a ton of excellent films that are playing in theaters right now. I highly suggest making American Hustle a priority to see. With an all-star cast playing the main and support characters, this movie is armed to the teeth with acting power. Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence do a fantastic job getting into their characters, and really bringing the complexities of the characters to life.
So the film is about the con duo Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Adams) get caught by FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper) who is trying to go hard after white collar crime. Richie’s immediate boss is played by Louis CK, and plays the role of the blubbering, play-it-safe-and-lets-not-get-killed FBI agent perfectly.
Richie’s drive to make the big busts get’s everyone in over their head when using Irving and Sydney to set up a sting to catch New Jersey Mayor Carmine Polito (Renner). Eventually the mob gets involved, and it looks like the film is going to take a Tarantino turn and everyone is going to get whacked!
This film is just a nonstop roller-coaster ride of oh-shit-what-will-happen-next until the credits roll. Besides the situational drama, you have the main characters competing for power and leverage over one another. Sydney is Irving’s lover, partner in crime, and mistress, but he also has a wife, Rosalyn Rosenfeld (Jennifer Lawrence) who comes into play. Everyone is manipulating everyone, and it’s hard to see were their true feelings lie.
There’s so much to this movie, I can’t wait to see it again. I easily give it a 4.5 out of 5. Go watch it, you will have a good time. And if you’re still on the fence, well why don’t you watch the trailer one more time?
