Just recently, the British House of Lords approved plans to fully legalise same-sex marriage in England and Wales. Currently, only same-sex unions are available to couples in the UK. The legislature passed with a huge amount of support, and what’s bloody brilliant is the Church of England have declared they are giving up the fight against the inevitable!
However that doesn’t mean the Church is going to leave everything up to the politicians. In fact, the truth is just the oppositie, bishops will be joining the politicians in order to “strengthen” the bill, said Rt Revd Tim Stevens, Convenor of the Lords Spiritual.
“Both Houses of Parliament have now expressed a clear view by large majorities on the principle that there should be legislation to enable same-sex marriages to take place in England and Wales,” said Bishop Stevens.
“It is now the duty and responsibility of the Bishops who sit in the House of Lords to recognise the implications of this decision and to join with other members in the task of considering how this legislation can be put into better shape.”
Of course putting the legislation “into better shape” includes “protections and exemptions for people of faith,” but holy christ-on-a-cracker they want to make sure actual good is done as well! Like making sure when a lesbian couple in a same-sex marriage has a baby, the non-birth mother is also on the birth certificate as a parent. The bishops want to introduce a notion of adultery into the bill, so that when one spouse catches another cheating they can get a divorce. That can’t happen currently because Government legal experts failed to define what is gay or lesbian “sex”.
So while normally one might be up in arms about religion keeping its hand in legislature, so far in this instance it seems like it’s a good thing.
I’ll cheers to the Church for that!
