The City of Brotherly Love is living up to its name! Yesterday Philadelphia’s mayor Michael Nutter signed a bill that many are touting as the most comprehensive piece of LGBT protections legislation of any city. Which is great, because that’s precisely Mayor Nutter’s goal, to make Philly “the most LGBT-friendly” city in the world.
The legislation offers tax credits to companies that extend health care coverage to LGBT employees’ domestic partners and their children. According to the Associated Press, this makes Philadelphia the first city in the United States to entice businesses into offering transgender-specific health benefits in exchange for tax credits.
As if that wasn’t impressive enough, the legislation adds transgender people to the existing anti-discrimination laws, requires all newly constructed city-owned buildings to have gender-neutral bathrooms, and last but not least, alter city forms so they offer options for same-sex couples and transgender people.
Man, I think I’ve got to pay Philly a visit soon!
