New Zealand, the most free country in the world and America’s favorite location for movies, already has civil unions that provides many of the same legal protections that marriage does. However, full same-sex marriage may be there soon! New Zealand overwhelmingly passed a same-sex marriage bill in a 77-44 vote on Wednesday. It was the second of three votes that must pass in order for the bill to be approved, and as the AP notes, the second vote is the most crucial with the third usually being just a formality.
The last vote will likely be held soon, in the next month or so.
In her speech supporting the bill, Wall said denying marriage to any person devalues that person’s right to participate fully in all that life offers.
“Marriage belongs to society as a whole, and that requires the involvement of the whole of society,” Wall said. “The role of the state in marriage is to issue a license to two people who love each other and want to commit to one another formally. That’s what this bill does.” – NPR, Associated Press.
Alright United States, time to get our freedom on and catch up!
