Over the last few weeks I’ve been covering the story of Ashley Broadway and her efforts to be included in the military spouse club at Fort Bragg, and I’m excited to say we have arrived at a happy ending! Broadway has finally been granted full membership to the Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Ashley Broadway (right) has been married to her wife Lt. Col. Heather Mack (left) for 15 years, and was recently named Fort Bragg’s 2013 Spouse of the Year by Military Spouses magazine. I can only imagine that and the negative press helped speed the spouse club’s decision to include her.
Previously, Broadway was offered a “guest membership” which she quickly rejected, saying the offering was “not only offensive, but just plain hurtful.”
However now the spouse group has added sexual orientation to it’s nondiscrimination policy, and offered her a full membership. Broadway responded in a statement Friday, “I am overjoyed to see ABOS’s inclusion of ‘sexual orientation’ in their non-discrimination clause. I have further reason to take pride in the Ft. Bragg military community, knowing that we, as military spouses, are able to come together to support each other, our soldiers, and our families.”
Man, it feels good when justice is served!
