Governor Martin O’Malley has now signed the Marriage Equality bill that passed through the Senate last week. This makes Maryland the eighth state to legalize same-sex marriage.
That’s the good news, the bad news is the bill won’t go into effect until January, 2013, and opponents of the law have already started organizing to get the 56,000 signatures needed for a voter referendum. If they succeed, come November then once again the rights of the people will be put to a vote.
USA Today has a full article on the signing, and a super nifty interactive map on where all 50 states stand on Marriage Equality.
