‘One Million Moms’ attacks JC Penny for hiring Ellen Degeneres, show your support!

JC Penny is being attacked by an off shoot of the hate-group American Family Association, OneMillionMoms.com. What’s got their panties in a bunch now? They’re angry at JC Penny for being super awesome and hiring Ellen DeGeneres as its new celebritiy  spokesperson.

Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families. More sales will be lost than gained unless they replace their spokesperson quickly. Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war then their brand transformation will be unsuccessful.

Their marketing strategy is to help families shop and receive a good value for their money. Degeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there. The small percentage of customers they are attempting to satisfy will not offset their loss in sales.

I’m sorry OneMillionMoms.com, but you’ve got it all wrong. Hiring one of America’s most beloved talk show hosts isn’t bad for sales, and definitely won’t hurt the advertising dollars. Have you seen how many twitter followers Ellen the Fabulous has? About 8 million more than the ‘million’ sized group you claim to have. But of course we still need to show our support for Ellen and JC Penny for being so awesome, GLAAD has launched a Stand Up For Ellen campaign to do just that.

  1. Nathan, I went to the petition to sign, but the form won’t accept my details and won’t process Sign when I click it:
    Postcode EH1 1JG
    State: Midlothian
    Country: Scotland, UK

Are you intending to limit to US only? If so, then I suggest removing the Country field from the petition, or fixing its value as “US only”. I would very much like to sign this, and I am sure there are many outwith the US who would like to but I can’t promote through my Facebook page for example, if it is not accepting non-US signatories.

    Can you look into this?

    • We aren’t running the petition Derek FYI. Nathan doesn’t have anything to do with the programming of the form. Perhaps sending them a note directly expressing your concerns might do some good. I’m in complete agreement with you that people outside the US should be able to participate. After all, the fight for equality is a global one! :-P
