Arizona state Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-Phoenix) announced she’s resigning her from Senate seat for a grab at a new seat in the U.S. House that was created by redistricting. If she’s able to snatch it up, Sinema will be the first openly bisexual member of congress.
Sinema made the announcement Tuesday, releasing a video as well as declaring on her Facebook page ”I’ve decided to run for Congress because we need to wake up Washington!” and ”I will fight for the forgotten middle class and stand up to a system that is rigged against them.”
While Sinema is the only canidate to offically annouce her bid for the 9th District, she isn’t the only one keeping an eye on the prize. The race is considered a toss-up between Democrats and Republicans, State Sen. David Schapira (D-Tempe) has formed an exploratory committee to see what the voters have to say, Arizona Democratic Party Chairman Andrei Cherny and former congressional candidate Jon Hulburd have also expressed interest in running.
