A 15 year-old student who Union-Scioto High School in Chillicothe, Ohio was viciously attacked by another student in the middle of classroom for being gay. The attack was caught on video and posted to Facebook, where you can watch the attacker wait for his victim, initiate the attack, throw his victim to the ground, and punch him in the head repeatedly. All while the other students just sat by and watched.
Video after the jump…
The victim, who’s name isn’t being released, suffered a chipped tooth and a possible concussion. The attacker only got 3 days suspension by the school. Luckily the mother knows this isn’t acceptable and is pursuing assault charges. In an interview with WSYX ABC 6, his mother said she would like a safer environment for students to be themselves. “All those people who have that hate in their heart—they need to let it go. Because people are gonna be who they are.”
Currently Union-Scioto Local School District does have policies against harassment based on sex, race, color, national origin, religion and disability, however nothing specifically protecting sexual orientation and gender identity. However if Ohio House Bill 208 ever gets out the House Education Committee, sexual orientation, gender identity and other protections would be added into current law. Equality Ohio director Ed Mullen commented “All students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, have the right to a safe school and education. Students should not fear verbal harassment, cyber-bullying, or physical assault in our public schools.”
Nothing makes me more angry than people just standing around watching someone get attacked. “All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke
