LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2011
- – - – - – -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
The story of America’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
Transgender (LGBT) community is the story of our fathers and
sons, our mothers and daughters, and our friends and neighbors
who continue the task of making our country a more perfect Union.
It is a story about the struggle to realize the great American
promise that all people can live with dignity and fairness under
the law. Each June, we commemorate the courageous individuals
who have fought to achieve this promise for LGBT Americans, and
we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all,
regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Don’t Say Gay Turns Into Don’t Say Math, Reading, Comprehension
By now I am sure that you have heard about the so called “Don’t Say Gay” bill that is roaming around the Tennessee Legislatures. The bill was intended to prevent teachers from discussing homosexuality in public schools. As bad as that legislation was, the bill became worse (and much funnier) after Amendment 5 was added. Amendment 5 states “Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, any instruction or materials made available or provided at or to a public elementary or middle school shall be limited exclusively to natural human reproduction science.”
Now read that section again, but pay attention to the actual words and not just the meaning. This amendment changes the meaning of the bill to state that “any instruction or materials made available…to a public elementary or middle school shall be limited exclusively to natural human reproduction science. Period.
If you take this literally, that means schools will not be able to teach math, biology, reading or any other subject other than natural human reproduction science. I hope this passes. I would love to see how many schools get sued for teaching math and other subjects.
Mayor Bloomberg calls for marriage equality!
Mayor Bloomberg of New York makes a great speech calling for marriage equality. It’s 18 minutes long, but he makes some very good points. You can jump ahead to 11:20 for my favorite quote that I feel no republican can make any logical argument against, (but then again if Conservatives made decisions based on logic we would’ve won long ago).
You can also read the quote after the jump.
Ken Mehlman on Gay Marriage
Ken Mehlman, who managed the 2004 Bush campaign that focused so heavily on the denying gay people the right to marry through an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, came out last year and has now recorded a segment for Big Think explaining why he thinks Republicans should support marriage equality:
I’m still undecided whether Mehlman is a hypocrite of the worst sort or if he represents a coup for gay rights as a high-powered Republican who’s willing to try to convince other Republicans that gay people aren’t going to eat their babies. Either way this video represents at least one step toward him making amends for all the damage he did while in the Bush administration.
1 in 4 Queer?? OMG, they’re everywhere!!
The Gallup Poll today released the results of a survey that indicate Americans estimate the gay population in the United States at 25%. That’s up from 21% in a similar survey done in 2002. It’s well above the 10% figure that has been popular since the Kinsey reports of 1948 and 1953, and dramatically more than Demographer Gary Gates’ recently released study that put the figure at 3.5%.
In Gallup’s survey, the younger the respondent, the higher the perceived percentage gays were thought to be. In the 18 – 29 year old age group, the numbers of gays are estimated at 29.9%. As age increases, the estimated numbers dropped, but in the 50 – 64 year old group, survey participants still thought 22% of Americans are gay.
The anti-gay forces in America were quick to jump on the 3.5% number, claiming it proved that homosexuality was an aberration, and didn’t warrant laws to protect members of that demographic. (even though that number puts gays in even more of a minority position than was thought previously!)
I can’t wait to hear the spin coming out of this survey. Can’t you just hear the anti-gay crowd going on about the control of the media the gays have, and they’ve used that control to convince the American public that gays make up 25% of the population!
